📝 Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Preparing the Aromatic Stuffing

First, heat 1 tsp of desi ghee in a pan. Add the fresh grated coconut and roast it gently for a minute on a medium-low flame.

✨ My Secret Trick:  Usual method where people melt the jaggery first and then add coconut, I always roast the coconut first. This releases an incredible, rich aroma that makes your modaks taste heavenly!

Now, add the jaggery along with 1 to 2 teaspoons of water to help it melt evenly. Stir continuously until the jaggery dissolves completely and blends beautifully with the coconut. Add the cardamom powder, mix well, and cook until the mixture thickens slightly but stays juicy. Transfer it to a plate and let it cool completely.

Step 2: Making the Perfect Rice Dough (Ukad)

In your steamer base or a deep pot, bring 1 cup of water to a rolling boil. Add a teaspoon of desi ghee into the water.

💡 Pro Cooking Tip: Adding ghee to the boiling water makes the dough extra soft, smooth, and easily manageable, preventing any cracks later.

Gradually add the rice flour while stirring rapidly to ensure no lumps are formed. Turn off the heat immediately. Cover the vessel with a lid and let it rest in its own steam. Transfer the warm dough to a large plate, wet your hands with a bit of water, and knead it thoroughly into a smooth, crack-free, soft dough ball. Divide into small equal rounds.

Step 3: Shaping Modaks Using a Mould (Sancha)

Take a standard modak sancha (readily available in markets or online) and grease its inner sides with a little ghee. Take a piece of dough, shape it into a slightly elongated form, and insert it firmly into the closed mould.

[]

Use your finger or thumb to hollow out the center, pressing the dough securely against the inner walls of the mould. Pack a small portion of the cooled coconut stuffing into this cavity. Seal the bottom base carefully with a small piece of rice dough. Gently open the mould to reveal a beautifully shaped, sharp-edged modak.

Step 4: Steaming on a Banana Leaf

Prepare your steamer with water. Take a clean banana leaf, cut it to fit, and place it nicely on the steamer plate. Arrange the shaped modaks on top of the leaf.

✨ Highlights: Using a banana leaf is a wonderful traditional trick. It prevents the modaks from sticking to the base, allows them to release effortlessly, and infuses a subtle traditional flavor.

Cover and steam them on medium-high heat for about 10 minutes until they look beautifully shiny and glossy to the touch.

Step 5: Final Offering & Serving

Carefully take the hot modaks out and arrange them on a serving plate. Drizzle a generous amount of pure, hot desi ghee over the freshly steamed modaks. Your pristine white, juicy Ukdiche Modaks are ready to be offered as a sacred Prasad to Lord Ganesha!

The aroma of fresh ghee and cardamom will fill your whole house, bringing joy and prosperity. You must try this easy recipe this Ganesh Utsav!
